You make a great point. I struggled with this because, as you suggested, she really doesn’t deserve the attention. But then, as a journalist, I’m often called upon to write about things that don’t deserve attention and people who want nothing else. And as an activist, I think it’s important to address this kind of thinking, as it’s not only ridiculous but dangerous too, and I did just that in the past when Billy Porter’s Golden Globes gown inspired unnecessary outrage. I would have ignored this round entirely since what Candace said wasn’t new or noteworthy, if my Facebook friend hadn’t inspired me to look at it from another angle. So yeah, I suppose she does get what she wants, more attention. And for those who are inclined to give it to her, I would hope they can do so respectfully without feeling that her race or gender exempts her from being called out, which is the main theme here. I agree with you that Harry shouldn’t have given her the time of day — not for the reason my friend suggested but because she isn’t worth it. That said, I like how he responded, not by lashing out or engaging in a war of words but with a simple stroke of humor. Thanks for your response and thanks for reading.
