Yes. Racial stereotypes are based on racism. Would you assume a white person is a rapper just by looking at them? Unlike what some people choose to believe, racism isn’t just about burning crosses, lynching black men, and shooting up black churches. It’s also in the subtle and not-so-subtle ways some are constantly putting minorities in that box labeled “Other.” It’s also in the knee-jerk assumptions some make about minorities based solely on their race. No-one has ever assumed I’m a rapper just by looking at me. I’m tall and athletic, so I can understand the basketball assumptions, hackneyed as they are. But nothing about my demeanor or my physical appearance, other than the color of my skin, would suggest rapper, so to go there would be almost tantamount to suggesting that a black man can’t possibly be anything else.
