Thank you for this comment. I wrote this piece a couple of years ago, and my point of view has actually evolved quite a bit since then. There’s an episode of Sanford and Son I recently watched where Fred goes to the dentist and demands a white dentist because he thinks he will be better trained. I had seen the episode before, but this time I really appreciated the subtext and not just the LOL jokes. It speaks to a lot of the racism and distrust within the black community, which was pretty revolutionary for its time — or any time. And I agree about Sherman Helmsley and Redd Foxx. They both were incredible actors and incredibly funny.
