No one is suggesting wiping these books from the face of the earth — or even removing them from school libraries. It is simply adjusting the curricula so that black kids won’t have to sit in English class and hear the N word constantly being read out loud by white teachers and white students. It IS triggering — whether white people get it or not. There are millions of other great books out there to study in class that kids are actually missing out on because so many teachers in the US are uncreative and obsessed with the same few books. No one’s education will be harmed. It’s actually stunningly simple. If kids can live without reading Romeo and Juliet in class because it romanticizes suicide, they can live without reading Mark Twain in class too. Those books will still be available. I’m over people overreacting and acting like we are recommending burning books and ending civilization as we know it. Like I said, it’s stunningly simple.
