My goal is neither. I don’t want to erase history or literature. Are those teachers who removed Romeo and Juliet from their reading lists erasing history and literature? No one seems to be outraged until the goal is to protect Black children specifically. That is the crux of the problem. I want classrooms to be a safe and comfortable space for both Black and White students. These books should still be in libraries so that children can check them out if they want to and read them at home. And by the way, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was written by a Black woman, so this isn’t just about books by White authors.
