Matt, you are absolutely correct. Jefferson’s beliefs may have been more widely acceptable back then, but there have always been people enlightened enough to not be completely defined by the prevalent thinking of their time. I don’t know if that makes Jefferson better or worse than a racist in 2021, who has considerably more exposure to anti-racist thought, or if it even matters. But there are no statute of limitations to apply to the condemnation of dangerous words and ideas, so Jefferson, Jackson, Polk, Buchanan and Wilson will remain deserving of rebuke for as long as they remain too dead to redeem themselves.
