James, I hear you regarding the LGBTQ community. As I’ve written about in the past, as an adult, I have never felt Blacker than I have in the presence of gay White men. They have been the source of the most memorable and hurtful instances of overt racism I’ve experienced since coming out in my early 20s, especially during the 13 years I was living abroad. I’ve never understood people in minority groups hurting people in other minority groups, but it seems to be the way things are when every group is competing for the title of Most Oppressed. There’s actually a very funny Will & Grace episode about this.
