I always enjoy hearing from you. I agree with some of what you say. I think the far right and the far left have a lot more in common than either side would care to admit. I believe I pointed that out in a piece I wrote back when the progressives were still losing their shit over Joe Biden securing the Democratic nomination.

I've always considered myself more of a centrist in theory, but passion pushes me to the left on some matters. I believe you've told me in the past you are straight. I assume you are White as well. Part of White straight privilege (and yes, that is a thing) is that you can afford to exist in the comfortable space where you can quell those bursts of passion, look at things objectively, and expect others to do the same.

When you've spent your entire life being ostracized and dehumanized for your sexual orientation and your race, homophobia and racism cease to be matters of opinion where you live and let live, shrug and move on. My sister-in-law recently told me about having to go into my 15-year-old niece's bedroom and scoop her off the floor because she was bawling over being bullied mercilessly by her White classmates who find it all too easy to cut her down to size with the N-word because characters in the classic literature they read in class say it so why can't they? It's not that simple, and it seems that the world only cares when the White children - particularly the girls - shed tears. That is my 15-year-old niece's world view, and it breaks my heart. So no, I will not be taking a live and let live approach to racism, and if a toddler were to call me a racist or homophobic slur, I wouldn't just roll my eyes and shrug it off as some Whites might expect me to do.

Your responses are always very measured and controlled, and while part of me admires that and wishes I could be more like you, I also realize that your life circumstances may allow for this while mine don't. As I pointed out in another recent piece, when you grow up being judged and deemed less worthy because of the color of your skin, linear reasoning doesn't always follow. I agree that there is a lot of clickbait-y extremism on Medium, but there are times when extremism is necessary. I hope that eventually we can get the country back to a place where I can settle back into the middle ground without being triggered on an almost weekly basis.
