Hey there, Erik. You make great, valid points, but I think they also underscore the ways in which TSA is different. Yes, there are racist workers who will make it difficult for certain travelers (like me, on some occasions), but as you pointed out, workers of color are allowed to be part of the system. Basically, the racism and oppression are doled out by individuals, but they are not technically built into the TSA system itself. They may be due to systemic racism in the larger sense, but they are not systemic, as they are in Israel, where brown skin demands a higher level of suspicion, regardless of the personal inclinations of whomever is wielding the power. I’m glad you had a great experience in Baltimore and got to experience Black Americans as they are and not as how certain segments of the population like to characterize them.
